PaleoPortal is an online resource for anyone interested in paleontology, from students and dedicated amateurs to professionals in the lab. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the site is operated by the
University of California Museum of Paleontology. Whirl-i-Gig developed software to power all aspects of the site: a database to manage geological maps and information for the whole of North America; an automated web-based peer-review system to accept and evaluate user submitted images and URLs; a distributed search engine, based upon the
DiGIR protocol and capable of searching specimen collections of a dozen musuems across the United States; a content management and presentation system that is the site's public face.
The DiGIR-based collections search software developed for PaleoPortal has proven to be of
particular interest to the wider paleo-community and will be made available for download
under an open-source license in 2008.
